First Thoughts/Initial Research

I love architecture and have always been fascinated by how nature influences architectural design. A creative and sustainable design method called "biomimicry architecture" takes inspiration from the natural world. The idea is to investigate how natural processes, materials, and systems function in order to guide design decisions. Architects and designers seek to construct more effective and environmentally sustainable structures by modelling natural solutions.

Biomimicry in Architecture

There are three different sorts of biomimicry: copying form and structure, duplicating a process, like photosynthesis in a leaf, and replicating an ecosystem at a large scale, such as creating a city inspired by nature.

Bio - life, organic

Mimicry - imitate

George de Mestral, a Swiss engineer, was returning from a hunting expedition with his dog in 1941 when he discovered that some seeds continued adhering to his clothing and his dog's fur. Seven years after examining this plant, he came up with the idea for the hook and loop fastener, which he called Velcro, after noticing that they included many "hooks" tangled with anything with a loop.

In her book Biomimicry - Innovation Inspired by Nature (1997), Janine Benyus promoted De Mestral's idea of drawing inspiration from nature and imitating and replicating the behaviour of biological organisms. The author introduces three concepts that link creation and human innovation with nature.

The Watercube

The architectural symbolism of the "water cube" is combined with the distinctive water bubble structure.

The Biomes

The Mediterranean Biome and the Rainforest Biome, both created by Grimshaw Architects, are connected in the middle by the Link building. Both Biome structures are made up of multiple connected domes.
